We will go to the Drachenfels, a scenic mountain south of Cologne with the ruins of a castle on top. It offers a wonderful view onto the Rhine valley. It is one of the most northern places where you find vineyards. Old sagas report about a dragon living here and asking for human sacrifice. In the famous Nibelungen Saga the hero Siegfried killed the dragon on its way to Worms, the capital of Burgundy.
13:30 Departure to Königswinter. The bus will pick us up at the conference centre.
14:15 Arriving in Königswinter near the rack railway station.
14:30 Rack railway to the top. Short climb to the castle ruins from hill station.
Our next stop is Schloss Drachenburg (Drachenburg Castle) built in the romantic period of the 19th century when the Rhine valley was a popular holiday spot. You find it on your way downhill.
Descend is according to your choice, either by rack railway or foot. Walking down will take about 15 min and offers fantastic views on Schloss Drachenburg and the river.
Note. Your railway ticket is a return ticket. Railways leave the top every 15 minutes. There is a stop at Drachenburg Castle.
The entrance ticket to Drachenburg Castle is contained in your registration package. It allows you to walk around in the garden and visit parts of the castle, e.g. the northern tower.
15:45 Guided tour. We meet at the outer bailey. After entering the park, follow the right way leading into the valley.
There will be two guides, an English and a German speaking one. The group size is limited to no more than 25 people.
What you can visit has only recently been restored. You will see wall paintings and glass windows as well as furniture. It gives a good impression of the life style of the Gründerjahre (fin de siècle) period.
From the terrace you have another splendid view towards the river. If you don't like the café here, there is another one shortly after Drachenburg Castle, called Winzerhäuschen, again with a nice large terrace.
Note that the very last part of the way downhill is a bit steep (22 %). You might prefer taking the rack railway from Drachenburg castle.
When you come down to the rack railway station, walk a bit further and turn left towards the small town of Königswinter (see map 1). On weekends it is usually a busy place. It is rather typical for the many nice villages along the river on the way to Mainz. You might find it nice to stroll through the small streets and sit down for a coffee or an ice cream, or have a look the Siebengebirgsmuseum, Kellerstr. 16.
18:30 We will meet again at the jetty of the KD (Köln-Düsseldorfer) shipping company (see map 1). Please be on time!
18:40 Ship to Bonn.
19:15 Arriving in Bonn, bus to Cologne.
The bus will stop near the place of the Conference Dinner. Please see map 2.
20:00 Conference Dinner.
Map 1: Königswinter
It takes about 15 minutes to walk from the rack railway station to the jetty.
